Thermal Video The Sixth Sense
When performing advanced diagnostic work, startup, retro-commissioning and preventative maintenance you need every advantage. Thermal cameras and now video cameras help see and record what the eye just can't see. MSC recently purchased a FLIR thermal video camera for data logging and to document accurate, high-resolution images that can help find and identify problems so they can be corrected ASAP.
On a recent large start-up and commissioning project, MSC had an opportunity to use and record dynamic thermal images on chilled and hot water coils. Steam heat exchangers, refrigeration compressors, and steam traps. MSC recorded several problems where coil performance was off and not providing proper delta temperatures. The thermal video was able to quickly show problem areas at the bottom of coils where there was minimal or low flow. The camera had also picked up on a few steam and condensate leaks under insulation and an F&T trap malfunction that was contributing to a steam hammer issue. The video also picked up several fan coil leakage issues and one refrigerant compressor problem.
The thermal video results made a significant impression on the owner, as well as assisting in solving several issues. The video abetted to solve a few problems they were not aware existed and saved a lot of wasted energy.
